Celebrating their 40th year, the Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards serve to acknowledge, promote, and celebrate the contribution that sport makes to the wider Wellington community.

The awards are organised by Sport Wellington and have been named one of the most prestigious events on the Wellington sporting and social calendar.

The 2019 awards seek to recognise excellence and dedication to Wellington sport during the time period from 17 April 2018 to 17 April 2019. Nominees must either reside in the Greater Wellington region, represent a Greater Wellington-based sport and recreation organisation or be widely regarded as a Wellingtonian. There are 12 categories recognising the sporting excellence of athletes, teams, volunteers, officials and coaches.

The awards ceremony will once again see the induction of four new Legends of Wellington Sport who, once inducted, will have plaques honouring their achievements installed at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.

As the independent body for sport and physical activity in the region, Sport Wellington leads, invests, innovates, challenges, facilitates, and communicates with a wide range of stakeholders.

Sport Wellington is a Regional Sport Trust (RST) established in 1990 under a Trust Deed with charitable status. In 2008 Sport Wellington became a registered charity under the Charities Act 2005.

The Trust operates within a wide geographical area, spanning the region between Otaki in the west across to Masterton in the east and Wellington City in the south.
